Herman Miller Aeron
The benchmark. Everything else is measured against this chair.
- Best-in-class ergonomics, trusted by offices worldwide for 30+ years
- 8Z Pellicle mesh keeps you cool; PostureFit SL supports both sacrum and lumbar
- Comes in 3 sizes, getting the right size matters
- Expensive. Worth it for people who sit all day, every day
Who It's For
Anyone who sits 8+ hours a day and has the budget. Also a smart buy for people with chronic back pain who've tried cheaper chairs and stayed uncomfortable. Not necessary if you're working part-time or casually from home.
Build and Materials
The 8Z Pellicle mesh is woven in 8 zones of varying tension, so different parts of your body get different levels of support. It breathes exceptionally well, you don't get the sweaty-back problem of foam cushion chairs. The frame is built to last. Refurbished Aerons from the early 2000s are still in service.
Comfort and Ergonomics
The PostureFit SL is the standout feature. Most chairs support just the lumbar (lower back). The Aeron also supports the sacrum, the bone just below your lumbar, which is where a lot of people actually hurt. Forward tilt lets you pitch the seat forward slightly for tasks that require leaning toward your desk.
Adjustability
Sizing Guide
- Size A (Petite): under 5'3" or under 130 lbs
- Size B (Standard): most people, 5'3" to 5'11"
- Size C (Large): 5'11" and above or over 230 lbs
Getting the wrong size is the #1 complaint from Aeron buyers. Measure before ordering.
Value
Hard to call the price good value in isolation. But Herman Miller offers a 12-year warranty, and the chair actually holds resale value. Used Aerons sell for $600 to $800 regularly. If you're buying once and keeping it for a decade, the math gets better.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Best lumbar and sacral support available
- 8Z Pellicle mesh stays cool all day
- 12-year warranty
- Strong resale value
- Comes in 3 sizes for a proper fit
Cons
- Very expensive
- Learning curve to adjust correctly
- Seat pan can feel hard without optional lumbar pad
- Wrong size means a much worse experience
Bottom Line
The Aeron is the standard for a reason. If your back is already giving you problems or you're going to be sitting 8 hours a day indefinitely, this is the right long-term investment. If you're working casually, the Branch gets you 80% of the way there for $1,000 less.
